Do I Need a Website If I’m Already on Social Media? A Guide for Photographers & Creatives

August 15, 2026 · 6 min read

If you’re a photographer, videographer, or any kind of creative, you already have somewhere to show your work: Instagram, TikTok, a Facebook page, maybe Behance. Your feed is your portfolio. So the question is fair — why bother with a website at all?

It’s a question we hear a lot, and the honest answer isn’t “because everyone says so.” It’s that a website and social media do two completely different jobs — and the one social media can’t do is the one that grows a creative career.

The short answer

You need both — but for different reasons.

 Social mediaYour website
Best atDiscovery — getting seenDeciding — getting hired
Who’s in controlThe platformYou
Your audienceRentedOwned
Your best workBuried in daysFront and centre, always

Think of social media as the billboard and your website as the studio. The billboard gets people curious; the studio is where they decide to work with you.

You don’t own your audience on social media

This is the big one. Your followers aren’t really yours — they belong to the platform. An algorithm change, a shadowban, a hacked account, or a platform that fades in popularity, and years of building can vanish overnight. It has happened to countless creatives.

A website is the one part of your online presence you actually own and control. It’s your home base — the place that’s still standing no matter what any platform decides to do next. (We wrote more about why ownership matters in our guide to choosing a website platform.)

Your feed disappears. Your portfolio shouldn’t.

On social media, your best shoot from last month is already gone — pushed down by the endless scroll, seen by a fraction of your followers, impossible for a new client to find. Social feeds are built for what’s new, not what’s best.

A website lets you curate. You choose the work that represents you, organise it by the kind of clients you want more of, and present it beautifully — full-screen, high-resolution, without a platform compressing your images or cropping your videos. Your portfolio finally works the way your work deserves.

A website makes you findable

When someone in Cebu searches “wedding photographer” or “brand videographer near me,” social media rarely shows up — Google does. Without a website, you’re invisible to every client who’s actively looking to hire, right now, with money ready. A simple, well-built site puts you in front of exactly those people.

It tells clients you’re the real deal

Fair or not, a professional website signals that you’re serious and established. It’s where clients check your rates, read about your process, see testimonials, and feel confident enough to send that first enquiry. An Instagram DM feels casual; a proper website says “this is a business.” For the bigger, better-paying projects, that difference matters.

Social and website work together

This was never an either/or. The strongest creative brands use both, on purpose:

  • Social media gets you discovered — new eyes, daily presence, personality.
  • Your website converts that attention into bookings — the full portfolio, your rates, and a clear way to hire you.

Post on Instagram, link to your site in the bio, and let the two feed each other. Discovery on one, decision on the other.

“But I don’t have the time or budget”

This is the real reason most creatives put it off — and it used to be a good one. A portfolio site once meant weeks of work or a big custom quote. It doesn’t anymore.

You can start with a ready-made template designed for creative work and be online in days, with your domain and hosting handled for you — from ₱12,500, all-in. You add your photos, your videos, and your story; we take care of the technical side. When your work evolves, the same site can grow with you.

How we help creatives at KenSuarez Studio

We’re a Cebu studio that shoots photography and video and builds websites — so we get it from both sides. We know how to make a portfolio site that shows creative work the way it’s meant to be seen: fast-loading, image-first, and unmistakably yours.

Whether you want a done-for-you template launch or a fully custom portfolio, we can help. Take a look at our web design service, or just tell us about your work.

The bottom line

Social media is where people find your work. Your website is where they decide to hire you — and the only part of it all you truly own. For a creative building a career, that’s not a nice-to-have; it’s the foundation everything else sits on.

Frequently asked questions

Do photographers really need a website if they have Instagram?

Yes. Instagram is great for being discovered, but you don’t own your audience and your best work is buried within days. A website is the portfolio you control, where serious clients go to view your full body of work and decide to hire you.

Isn’t social media enough to get clients?

It’s enough to get noticed, but not always enough to get booked. Clients who are ready to pay often search Google and expect a website with your portfolio, rates, and a clear way to enquire. Social and a website do different jobs and work best together.

What should a creative’s website include?

At minimum: a curated portfolio or gallery, a short about section, your services or rates, and an easy way to contact you. Fast loading and image-first design matter most for photographers and videographers.

How much does a portfolio website cost in the Philippines?

You can launch a professional portfolio from ₱12,500 using a ready-made template that includes your domain and first-year hosting. Fully custom portfolio sites cost more depending on scope.

Will a website replace my social media?

No — they work together. Keep posting on social media to get discovered, and link to your website in your bio so interested people can see your full portfolio and hire you.

Thinking about finally giving your work a proper home? Send us a note — no forms, no funnels — and we’ll help you figure out the right fit, even if you’re just starting to explore.
